SLJH INFORMATION
- School starts at 8:45
- School ends at 3:55
- 45 minute class periods (ELAR 90 min Block)
- 5 minute passing period

GRADING INFORMATION
Grading periods are 6 weeks long. Progress reports are sent at 3 weeks.

Academic - On grade level KAP - Katy Advanced Program GT - Gifted and Talented
ACADEMIC COURSES
In grades K-5 students are in academic level coursework At the secondary level academic courses prepare students for college and post-secondary instruction Curriculum requires development of critical thinking and problem solving skills All TEKS are covered throughout these courses
KAP COURSES
CURRICULUM
- Same TEKS as Academic except for Math
- Higher level thinking and independent learning
are required
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS
- Positive attitude about school
- Great organizational skills
- Good work and study habits
KAP INFORMATION
Students must meet the following criteria for KAP classes:
- Masters academic material well
- Have parent approval
- Students whose six weeks average falls
below 70 will be removed from the class
CHOOSING COURSES
The decision to take academic or KAP should be made between you and your child. Some things to consider:
- Your student’s interests and strengths
- How hard your student is willing to work
- The grades your student has earned in school and
the kind of grades they would like to make
- Your student’s self motivation and attitude
- Standardized test scores
- Study habits
- Extracurricular activities and time commitments
- How quickly your student catches on to new
material
GT COURSES
- If you are currently being screened for GT, sign up for
KAP.
- When you enter your courses, it should
automatically put you in GT if you are currently in GT
- Only mark a GT course if you are currently in it
- If you’re not sure, ask your teacher
- GT testing takes place each year in January for
students who apply
MATH
ACADEMIC & KAP
- Academic = 6th grade TEKS
- KAP = ALL 6th grade + 1/2 of 7th grade TEKS
- Course covers an additional 18 weeks of
instruction
- KAP moves very fast
- Students who “Master” the 5th Grade STAAR
will automatically be placed in KAP 6th Grade Math
What do the TEKS look like at each level of Math?
English Language Arts and Reading
- Focus is on literacy
- Weaves reading and writing together naturally
- Blocked 90 minutes (2 class periods)
- KAP or ACA
○ Same TEKS (standards) ○ Summer Reading requirement ○ KAP has a faster pace ○ Students should have mastery of state tests to enroll in KAP
Extended Learning Time (ELT)
- 6th Period (32 min.)
- On a rotating schedule (Week 1: 1st/3rd/5th/7th, Week
2: 2nd/4th/8th)
- Mondays - character/study skills lessons
- Students may use this time as a study hall when in
Electives and PE
- Core content classes use this time to revisit concepts
that may need more attention or re-teaching

Band - brass, percussion, woodwinds Orchestra - String instruments Treble Choirs - girls singing and performing Tenor/Bass Choirs - boys singing and performing Theatre - Public speaking, presentations, acting Art - Drawing, painting, sculpting, etc.
FULL YEAR ELECTIVES
SLJH Spartan BAND
- There are many instruments to choose from. The three major
families of instruments are Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion. ○ Woodwind instruments are the Flute, Oboe, Basson, Clarinet, and Saxophone ○ Brass instruments are the Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, and Tuba ○ Percussion includes mallet instruments, xylophone, marimba, bells and chimes. There are non-pitched percussion, snare, and bass drum.
- No experience is required for any of these instruments. The
band directors will help you pick the best instrument for you during an instrument interview. Those interviews will begin in late
- February. Be on the lookout for a letter to sign up.
- We have three exciting and amazing performances for your first
- year. There are multiple field trips and other social gatherings
during the school year.

SPARTAN CHOIR
Join the Award Winning Spartan Choir! Whether you have Choir experience or not, if you love to sing, be a part of SLJH Choir to develop your voice and have fun! Choir Class in 6th Grade
- Choir 1 (boys) - 6th Grade Tenor Choir
A competitive performance choir made of only 6th grade guys who build an awesome team, sing exciting music and have fun together every day!
- Choir 1 (girls) - 6th Grade Treble Choir
A competitive performance choir made of only 6th grade girls that work hard every day, sing amazing music and grow to become a family! What We Do In Choir
- In Choir we sing popular and classical music, develop healthy singing technique
and tone, and learn to read, then sing music at first sight. Performances, Socials & Competitions
- There are 4 amazing performances throughout the year for all 5 Spartan Choirs!
- Compete at choral festivals and competitions with your Choir family or as an
individual solo performer.
- Fun parties like the Choir Olympics, Guys Night Out & Girls Pajama Party!
ART
Art 1- First time artists! Art 2 - Have completed the Art 1 prerequisite course. High School Art 1 - 8th graders only! Must have Art 1 (and possibly Art 2) as a prerequisite. This course earns credit towards your high school GPA! We compete in many art shows including Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, KISD Spring Show, Jr. Vase, National Dog show and more. In art we work with many mediums such as graphite pencil, Prisma colored pencils, watercolor, clay, pen and ink, printmaking, paper mache and many more.
- Choices: violin, viola, cello, bass
- Five Performing Orchestras and First Year Orchestra
- Instrument Interviews - April/May
○ Help deciding instrument, Rental Information, Sizing ○ Auditions for experienced players
- Three concerts, two optional contests, several after school socials
- FAQ: cello and bass students keep instrument at home

THEATRE
Theatre Class
No experience needed
- Content covers all areas of theatre:
- Acting, Auditions, Theatre History,
Directing, Stage Management, Playwriting, and Technical Theatre
Production Class
- 7th/8th graders only
- You must audition to be in this class
- Travels to elementary schools to perform
childrens shows
- Competes in One Act Play Competition
- Very intensive and rigorous course - think
Theatre Pre-AP
After School Productions
- Any 6th, 7th or 8th grader can audition
- You are not required to be in a theatre
class to audition
- Theatre classes are not required to
participate in after school productions.
- 6th graders attend PE every day.
- Students are required to dress out in the district
issued PE uniform each day.
- Students provide their own athletic shoes, socks
and sweats.
- Equipment fee $15 (PayNGo) - this covers the
“rental” of their uniform and laundry service for the year. Coaches wash student uniforms here at the school.
- PE IS REQUIRED
Athletics and UIL competition begin in 7th grade. UIL sports include Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Track & Field , Tennis & Soccer. Evaluations for placement into the Athletic Class period will take place in the Spring of the 6th grade year. Please visit the Seven Lakes JH Athletic Department web page for additional information.
ATHLETICS
- For those students interested in being in
Athletics/ Playing Sports in 7th Grade.
- During the PE class period.
- Class focus is sport skill instruction and
development as well as athletic conditioning.

- Off Campus PE forms will be accepted in

- Return Signed Course Selection Sheets to your teacher
by the date your campus gives you
COURSE SELECTION
- Course Verification Sheets will come home
the week of March 16th and are due to teachers NO later than March 20th
- Once course verification is complete there will
be NO more schedule changes allowed until schedule pick up
- At schedule pick up students may request a
level change only
