Located at the southwest edge of Folegardos, Varsamos is one of the less explored regions of the island, 11 km away from the city town. As you drive from the main road towards Varsamos you arrive at a dirt path which ends at Chrysopigi chapel. After one kilometer you reach the estate where you can park the vehicles. From this point start two traditional paths, (one on the right and one on the left), which lead you towards the gardens called “Skales” (Stairs). Following, you can tread the left stone path through a mesmerizing expanse of lushly gardens which end up at the sea.

The “otherside” of the island

During your personalized journey, immerse yourself in an incredibly diverse ecosystem and trace back stories and myths of the region, such as the shipwreck in 1943 of the Swedish-owned EROS cargo ship with its crew or the ship "Mastro-Lias" which was wrecked in January 1966 on the northwestern side of the island. Varsamos Stairs is a designated Natura 2000 site which also serves as a 'staging post' for migratory birds. It is protected from the north winds, while the area is not recommended in case of strong south winds. The area presents traditional lemon houses (houses built around lemon trees to protect them from strong winds). The vegetable gardens, dating back to 1886 and earlier, have built in gradients, so they called "Stairs”. They are organically grown and irrigated by the natural-underground springs and streams of the area.

A destination of astonishing natural beauty and simplicity

Visitors will be fascinated to have a stroll at the countryside, throughout an area made up of four different stairs. At the last garden area we prepared a unique outdoor space in a relaxing scenery and tranquil atmosphere, untouched by tourists. Our traditional lemon house serves as a resting area where we set up a table with chairs under a shading pergola of the yard. There is also a restroom area where our guests may change or use the chemical toilet. The lighting of the event area, the lemon house, the paths, and the landscape in general is made of bioclimatic systems using photovoltaic panels. The whole scenery represents the passion and care that we have for our guests. Early in the afternoon, around 3:30 pm, our expert chef at “Kouroupia” restaurant in the heart of Folegadros town will teach you how to prepare delicious Greek recipes made with local and organic ingredients. Right after the food is prepared, around 5:00pm, you can begin your journey to Varsamos and explore the countryside and the beautiful surrounding natural setting with a tour guide. Afterwards, stroll around the lush gardens where you can choose your favorite organic salad vegetables.
