BUILDI DING G ON OUR SUCCESS

In 2004 waste policy in South Australia took a profound step. Zero Waste SA Act 2004 and creation of the Waste to Resources Fund. Zero waste is often used with the phrase ‘circular economy’. The circular economy is where the by- products and wastes from one process become the inputs to another.

Waste Management Hierarchy is a core principle in the Zero Waste SA Act 2004. Green industries support the green economy and the circular economy, both part of the broader economy. These embrace the waste hierarchy. Zero Waste SA has successfully introduced change programs which have influenced householder behaviour. It has built consistent council waste collection systems through grants, provided new infrastructure through grants, supported innovation- through grants - to solve emerging waste problems and influenced regulatory practices. It has also provided research grants through unique collaborative models. It has been internationally recognised for its work.
