Current status of persistent identifiers at Montana State Library:

  • 2009-12-28 Date of the first created PURL at MSL.
  • 2015-08-19 Date of the last PURL created at MSL.
  • 7,759 Total number of PURLs created by MSL.
  • 26,443 Total number of items at Internet Archive.

Issues:

  • Inability to create new PURLs using the same prefix.
  • Minimal PURL service support.
  • Staff turnover. Missing documentation.
  • Cursory research indicates modest rate of adoption by institutional repositories
  • worldwide. Also, DNS name system controlled by outside organizations.
