LITERACY FOR ALL PROGRAM

SUPPLY, NC

BCLC Mission: To improve lives by providing literacy skills to adults. The program was developed for non- English speaking adults with children in the district so they can learn the language and more effectively communicate with their children and teachers.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC

A Mission Society grant was sought to sponsor 50 new adults in this program by purchasing the necessary materials for them to take the class. The program is taught at two different elementary schools in the district.

One share of Canticle Farm produce is estimated to provide a week’s worth of vegetables for a family of 4-5 people. The $3,000 grant from the Mission Society met the needs of up to 20 individuals each week.

In the Sponsored Shares program, grant funds are used to support the Hot Meal programs in the community, such as the Harvest Field Café (left) and to also teach different techniques for healthy food preparation by using the fresh produce.

While Beacon itself is not a poor community, they have a homeless population and a good number of families who are on the edge of homelessness.

THE GOOD SAMARITAN FUND

– BEACON, NY

The $3,000 grant from the Mission Society was used to provide food for 40 families in the Beacon Newburgh

  • communities. Each family was issued a

$50 voucher to be used at the local

  • market. When the family arrives, the

manager calls the parish for verification. These families experienced unexpected expenses related to illness, repairs or deaths. Any remaining funds after the vouchers are dispersed were used for these emergencies.

DAYSTAR LIFE CENTER

  • ST. PETERSBURG, FL

The Mission of Daystar Life Center is to provide basic needs on an emergency basis. The $1,500 grant from the Mission Society provided basic hygiene supplies for the poor and homeless.

DAYSTAR LIFE CENTER

VOLUNTEERS are the backbone of the center and provide direct service to the clients when they arrive. Bob and Bill and longtime volunteers who are so grateful to have socks, razors and basic hygiene items for their clients. Daystar continues to attend to their clients’ desires to be clean and feel clean, just as most of us do.

for at-risk youth and familieds in Anápolis, Goiás, Brazil.

  • Franciscan Ministries – provided funds towards the building of a new “Honey

House” at Porziuncola Farm in Braes River , Jamaica.

  • FSA – Brazil Region – support for social and formation program in Pires do Rio

including furniture, equipment, office/educational materials.

  • FSA – Brazil Region – provided social service protection for families in

Anápolis, Goiás, Brazil.

The $3,000 grant from the Mission Society provided music equipment to develop human and spiritual formation for kids at risk of prostitution, drugs and crime.

The $2,000 Mission Society grant was not spent this year as more money is needed for this project. They applied for $10,000 for a 5-room “Honey House” for storage of bee hives, extraction of honey, storage for supplies, bottling room and staff bee-suit storage.

Grant for $3,000 to replace windows in the 100 year old building to provide better ventilation and safety.

BUILDING SANITARY FACILITIES

Once per month, over 150 elderly people come to the Convent for food and

  • medication. They are there for up to

three (3) hours in the morning and were in great need of sanitary facilities. The male maintenance employees of the Convent use the new facility on a daily basis. Leftover funds are being used to upgrade the old dilapidated lavatory to be able to serve the male workers.

TRINITY CAFÉ 2 TAMPA, FL

The mission of Trinity Café is to restore a sense of dignity to the homeless & hungry while serving a nutritious meal. They faithfully treat all of God’s children with dignity, compassion, love and respect. Trinity Cafe volunteers and staff hold hands as they say a prayer just prior to the opening of the new Trinity Cafe Monday, April 25, 2016 in Tampa. The café, which for the past 15 years has dished out more than a million gourmet quality meals to the homeless and needy in the heart of Tampa, opened up its second eatery Monday. The two locations are expected to double its

  • utput of food, seating some 600 people a day.

The Mission Society grant of $3,000 enabled the Trinity Café to purchase a new commercial ice machine and have it installed. Hydration is important to guests and the Café provides unlimited iced tea and water with meals each day.
