Our objectives

  • Build quality structures using an

alternative building system that is environmentally friendly and cost effective

  • Train people from the community

(business and technical skills) and deploy these skills to carry out projects

  • Create a sustainable infrastructure

that provides community based entrepreneurs with a technically qualified support and mentorship base

  • On all levels, ensure that projects (and training) are run
  • n the principles of fair trade and respect for all people

at all times

Method - three main elements

  • Timber framework Timber

frames that form the framework for the sandbag walls

  • Geo-fabric bags filled with sand

and stacked between the beams

  • Cladding the structure with

plaster, timber or plasterboard

slide-4
SLIDE 4

Better than conventional methods

  • The completed structure

is waterproof, fireproof and soundproof, and has excellent thermal properties

  • While standard walls

may develop cracks in the plasterwork that can carry through the entire wall, this cannot happen with this system, as cracks cannot run through sand

Local communities can participate

  • Once the framework is in

place, filling and stacking sandbags can be undertaken by semi / unskilled labour thus providing job and entrepreneurial opportunities within the local community

  • Much of the sand required

to build the structure can be obtained from the building site

slide-6

Low carbon footprint

  • The weight and design
  • f the construction

material makes it easy to transport

  • Sites with lot of sandy

soil are ideal

  • Building using the

SandBag building method dramatically decreases the cost of building and is also environmentally friendly

slide-7

Quick build capabilities

  • SandBag structures

can be produced in a very short space

  • f time, as no actual

brickwork needs to be done

  • Once the beams and

bags have been transported to the site, the framework can be erected within a few days

Structurally sound and durable

  • This construction

alternative offers design flexibility, environmental responsibility, energy efficiency, long term structural integrity, durability and lower

  • peration costs

Reasons for building with sandbags

  • Construction takes

place at locations to which road access is not provided. This reduces the damage and congestion caused by heavy trucks transporting bricks and cement

  • No electricity is required on the

construction site

  • Uses two thirds less timber than

conventional building methods

Reasons for building with sandbags

  • No bricks lie around the

construction site, reducing the possibility of theft

  • The system exhibits

tremendous thermal stability, the house remains cool in summer and warm in winter

  • The system provides

exceptional sound absorbing qualities, helping provide a measure of privacy in close quarter living

  • The system resists water penetration
