Our objectives

• Build quality structures using an

alternative building system that is environmentally friendly and cost effective

(business and technical skills) and deploy these skills to carry out projects

• Create a sustainable infrastructure

that provides community based entrepreneurs with a technically qualified support and mentorship base

Method - three main elements

• Timber framework Timber

frames that form the framework for the sandbag walls

• Geo-fabric bags filled with sand

and stacked between the beams

• Cladding the structure with

plaster, timber or plasterboard

Better than conventional methods

• The completed structure

is waterproof, fireproof and soundproof, and has excellent thermal properties

• While standard walls

may develop cracks in the plasterwork that can carry through the entire wall, this cannot happen with this system, as cracks cannot run through sand

Local communities can participate

• Once the framework is in

place, filling and stacking sandbags can be undertaken by semi / unskilled labour thus providing job and entrepreneurial opportunities within the local community

• Much of the sand required

to build the structure can be obtained from the building site

Low carbon footprint

• The weight and design

material makes it easy to transport

• Sites with lot of sandy

soil are ideal

• Building using the

SandBag building method dramatically decreases the cost of building and is also environmentally friendly

Reasons for building with sandbags

• Construction takes

place at locations to which road access is not provided. This reduces the damage and congestion caused by heavy trucks transporting bricks and cement

• No electricity is required on the

construction site

• Uses two thirds less timber than

conventional building methods
