The Art, Science and Algorithms

  • f Photography!

Finish Basic Photography General Workflow! CSCI 4900/6900! Maria Hybinette!

1!

Outline!

Conclude basic photography, general workflow.!

  • Take the Shot!
  • Post processing, rule of thumb (white balance)!
  • Print, post your shots on the web (general,

guidelines)!

  • More about the zone system!
  • Odds & Ends!

Next week:! !Start with : Camera hacking begin! !More advanced topics (sensor limitations, color theory, lens choice).!

2!

  • 1. Basic Workflow (Natural light)!
  • Visualize your shot (portraits), planning!
  • Context, background, clothing.!
  • Best light: Golden hour, 1 hour: after/before sun!
  • Exposure, rule of thumb:!

– ISO: Low ISO (less noise, higher dynamic range).! – Depth of field (isolate your subject? or story telling?! – Shutter for correct exposure.! – Zone system (more shortly) maximize dynamic range!

  • White Balance (in camera, reduces post processing,

but in general can be fixed later). !!

  • Take the shot, evaluate, re-take the shot!

3!

  • 2. Basic Workflow: Raw Editing!
  • Shoot in RAW (we will talk about JPG vs RAW shortly)!

– Easier, improves dynamic range! – Easier to post process, less artifacts, higher qualiy! – Later: sensors are linear devices, vision isn’t we will talked about and visualize:!

  • Photons: Twice the light – twice the voltage linear!
  • Vision: How exposure works and vision logarithmic !
  • Do RAW adjustments (lower contrast, correct white

balance, exposure compensation (clippings), make sure you retain details – shadow, highlight recovery, careful with brightness / black point / contrast sliders). !

– Goal: maximize dynamic range & retain the details.! – Works on linear data (discuss this more later)!

  • Go into photoshop (applies a gamma curve, locks RGB

values).!

4!

  • 3. Basic Workflow: Photoshop Edit!
  • Remove noise (plug-ins?) – (talk about this later)!

– Some people do this later! – Noise removal in LAB space!

  • Remove Color casts (today)!
  • Add contrast, color enhancement!
  • Save!
  • Sharpen!
  • Crop!
  • Publish!

5!

White Balance (Global)!

  • Correct in ACR/Lightroom !

– Easy!

  • Photoshop!

– Color info / Color ! – LAB (easy to monitor neutrals)! – Levels (yellow family)! – Color balance (yellow family)! – Curves (black point, medium grey, white point)! – Grey fill layers to find medium grey!

  • Difference blending mode!

– Darkest areas are the most similar !! » Eye, Treshold!

Neutrals!

  • What is neutral?!

– Should be 0A, 0B (or close to) LAB! – Black, white and grey are all 0A, 0B! – Cats have white fur (cat’s greys are harder, could be brown).! – Concrete, tires, clouds, gray hair, rocks, stones, asphalt, cement, snow! – Brushed aluminum, iron, steel, ivory soap, sidewalks!

  • What is not neutral? (Chromatic adaption)!

– Eye ‘whites’ are pink (red)! – Undyed hair range from yellow to black (grey)!

  • Never green or blue!
  • What to do if there is no grays?!
