  • Jonathan Asaadi

– APA Consortium – Near Detector (ArgonCube) – Detector R&D

  • Jae Yu

– Field Cage/HV Consortium – Dual Phase – BSM Group Leader

  • One additional faculty member

aiming to join Intensity Frontier in our upcoming umbrella renewal (Apply this fall)

– Andrew Brandt: Will be based at UTA aiding

in DUNE and SBN projects

  • DOE IF-Base grant support

– 2 PI’s (Asaadi/Yu) – 1 post-doc: (50:50 SBN/DUNE) – 2 graduate students

  • 1 SBN (MicroBooNE / ICARUS)
  • 1 DUNE (protoDUNE single/dual phase)

– 3 undergraduates

  • Unfunded scientific labor (off-project labor)

– We are assuming 760 hours of a post-doc and 760 hours of a graduate student

during this five year period to suprivse/lead production

  • This is in addition to the current funded resources
  • This is only ~0.1 FTE per year, so represents a small risk from UTA overall, but is a

component of why we will ask for increased base support in our upcoming renewal

  • Obviously, we would like dedicated person (post-doc / student)

who can contribute to APA production at PSL/U. Chicago/Yale as part of this effort

– Help be a bridge between board level production and resources needed at

winding facilities

X-Plane Labor Board Cost Estimate X-Plane Labor Board Cost Estimate

  • Currently using the Board Cost Estimate

provided from PSL to assess what will be needed for labor and setup costs

slide-8
SLIDE 8

8

  • Equipment costs for the X-Plane boards is $334,527 ($2001/APA)

– 30 boards per APA = $66.70 / board

  • Does this include tooth strips, solder mask, cleaning supplies?
  • UTA is requesting $5000 in setup costs

– Includes $1,500 for two dedicated workbenches ($750/bench)

  • One for expoxy, solder mask, cleaning
  • One for socket insertion and curing

– Expoxy and Solder mask ($1,500) – Generic lab supplies ($1,500)

  • Safety gloves/goggles, blades, ethyl alcohol, etc…

– Epoxy/Solder baking oven ($500)

  • UTA is assuming we will ship boards for each APA as they are

completed (20 head boards and 10 foot boards)

– Conservatively estimated the FedEx shipping for a 25 lb large box from UTA to

Yale overnight shipping (~$170)

– This cost estimate could be much lower if we assumed no urgency in the

shipping (express saver ~ $20)

X-Plane Equipment Cost Estimate X-Plane Equipment Cost Estimate

slide-9
SLIDE 9

9

  • Equipment cost estimate included in the pre-proposal

– Nothing has changed from UTA’s perspecitve – Could lower our shipping estimates if we don’t want to be quite as

conservative

  • Not the largest cost driver...but might be worthwhile to discuss
  • UTA has not pursued (yet) quotes from vendors or additional

suppliers

– Plan is to use the same vendors at PSL – Will work with PSL to try to find additional vendors based on their experience

10

  • Assuming 30 X-plane boards per APA and 152 APA’s produced over 5

years

– August 2020 – July 2025 – 4560 boards total

  • Assuming a schedule profile from the preproposal budget

– Year 1: 15.1% (688 boards = 23 APA’s) – Year 2: 21.7% (990 boards = 33 APA’s) – Year 3: 21.7% (990 boards = 33 APA’s) – Year 4: 21.7% (990 boards = 33 APA’s) – Year 5: 19.8% (902 boards = 30 APA’s)

  • From PSL numbers we used that there would be 304 hours of

engineering time and 7600 hours of technical staff hours for all 4560 boards

– 0.07 hours of engineering per board – 1.7 hours of technical staff per board

  • We are requesting support for use of UTA Machince Shop Engineer for all 304 hours over 5

years

  • We assume x2 multiplier for undergraduate labor to replace technical staff (3.4 hours per board)

UTA has four lab spaces available immediately available immediately for use in this project 1) ~700 sq foot finished lab space with purified liquid argon capabilities (Asaadi’s Lab) 2) ~700 sq foot finished lab space (Yu’s Lab) 3) ~1000 sq foot unfinished lab space with class 100,000 clean tent, access to loading doc and physics machine shop

  • Space used for Dual Phase Field Cage Construction

4) ~300 sq foot clean storage space used for shipping and receiving

  • UTA has had success using the model of

undergraduate labor supurvised by G.S and postdoc’s for construction level projects

– Jae often quotes how UTA delivered Dual Phase Field cage on

time and under budget!1

  • 1 I make no claim as to the validity of this statement (I assume it is true)

An additional ~2100 sq feet of lab space is expected to be reallocated to the HEP group in 2020/2021 for use in DUNE construction projects

  • Currently occupied by chemistry group

– New building finished in Spring 2019 for chemistry researchers – Pending successful construction funding, commitment from University

VPR to help recapture this space

– Planned use for Field cage, APA, and near detector activities

Summary Summary

  • UTA has little needed setup and a ready pool of undergraduate labor to

participate in this work

– Successfully used undergraduates for Dual Phase Field Cage construction project

already

– Working space can be made ready for use with 2-3 weeks lead time

  • 54% indirect cost will be applied to modified direct cost

– Excludes x-plane board material
