The District by the Numbers

12 full time employees 50 summer employees

10,000 water sources and 65,000 catch basins surveyed and treated each year.

Board of Trustees

~750,000 people served by NWMAD Budget of $ 3 million annually ~ $ 3 dollars per 100,000 of property value

Mission of NWMAD

Manage mosquito populations that inhibit peoples’ ability to enjoy the outdoors and/or mosquitoes that can carry and transmit diseases to humans. Use integrated pest management (best management practices) to manage mosquito populations. These include: adult and larvae mosquito surveillance, larval abatement, adult treatment, mosquito habitat source reduction and public education.

Zika Virus

The mosquito species that spread Zika virus are not found in the Chicago area, but can occur in southern Illinois. The district does monitor for this species in case there is an introduction. 80% of people infected with Zika do not get ill. Women who are pregnant, or thinking of becoming pregnant, should consult their physician before traveling. Local transmission has occurred in southern Florida and Texas in
