  2.  Cobal balt has s many any key uses s in addition to rechargeable batteries, which can support circular economy aims  Global obal ve versus sus Euro ropea pean – shows different pictures for use- volumes and value chains  CRM (supply/demand and market access) – Cobalt obalt is main inly ly produ duce ced as a by-pro roduc duct from Copper and Nickel production  Respons sponsibl ible e Sou ourcin rcing g (artisa isana nal l mini ning? ng?) ) – new CIRAF currently under development  Nu Numer merous ous EU regula ulator ory y activi tivities ies on n coba balt lt compo ompounds ds presen ent t impli plicat atio ions (pos ossibl sible e barriers iers ) to CE aims…?  Through the new Cobalt LCA study and EU PEF Pilot project on rechargeable batteries - Env nvir ironmen ental al aspects ects are now better er understo derstood od and d char harac acterised terised

  3. Collecting new information about the use-vo volumes, es, material flows, , GLOBAL OBAL and value chains s for cobalt in Europe pe. This shows a different overall picture of end-uses by sector in the EU and globally. EUROPE OPEAN AN Batt tteri eries es Chem emicals

  5.  International pressure from civil society  Regulatory and policy pressures  Artisanal mining is being poorly regulated  LSM ( large scale mining ) responsible/sustainable working practices  CI strategy = develop CIRAF (Cobalt Industry Risk Assessment Framework), working with RMI ( Responsible Minerals Initiative ), inter alia Universal Declaration of Human Rights • United Nations Guiding Principles for Business • and Human Rights OECD Guidelines for Responsible Sourcing • Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI) • Equator Principles • Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) • ICMM Principles • CDI Principles •

  7. CI has completed first industry-led Life Cycle le Assessmen ent (LCA) ‘cradle to gate’ study for global al refined ined cobalt lt produc uction ion: o better characterise the environmental effects (benefits) o provide new life cycle inventory (LCI) data to replace existing (uncertain) data o to support other LCA studies of cobalt-containing products. CI is participating to Produc duct Environme ironmental al Footprint int (PEF) programme - Rechargeable Batteries pilot project o PEF provides new approaches/tools to benchmark the environmental performance of products/services

  8. Involves taking a Life Cycle Approach ch, and applying the appropriate tools, to illustrate the Role of C Cobalt in the Circula lar r Economy my COBALT PRODUCERS : Sustainability Reporting (GRI, etc.), Cobalt LCI-LCA Study SUPPLY CHAINS : Product Specifications, Eco-Design Responsible Sourcing END-USE SECTORS: Product sustainability profiles, Product Environmental Footprint SECONDARY COBALT : Collection Logistics, Recovery Technology Data needs for EOL !
