Arrival • Arrival on Saturday / Sunday before the language course/work placement starting date You will be met by a representative of ETS at the airport • • taken to ETS office by mini bus (depending on group size) • Representative will welcome you at the family meeting point • Hand out information (Language course / host family / maps) • You will meet your host family The family will take you to the accommodation •

Host Families Some participants might have two host families during their stay • • During the optional Language Course • During work placement (move on Saturday prior to placement start) ‘Family’ = Loose term – can be single person, elderly, young family… • • within 1 hour of work placement/language school • Single room accommodation, sometimes more than one student in the house • please ensure your room is kept clean and tidy Meals •  breakfast (toast / cereals / tea / coffee) •  evening meal (1 course, no starters, desserts) • Different eating habits / different types of food • • Have to adapt / accept differences

  5. Host Families • British People love pets (esp. Cats / dogs) • Pets will not be allowed in your room • allergy certificate • Some families very communicative, and some leave you to be more independent • Internet access cannot be guaranteed • Internet access at ETS Cardiff (student laptops, free WiFi) • Free access in many public places, libraries, pubs etc. At work – ask your supervisor if you may use the internet during break time / • after work • Inform your host family of your arrangement • e.g. if you will eat out, what time you will be back (so they don’t worry) • Costs of living / energy / heating • Have increased enormously • Put a jumper on before switching the heating on

Optional Language Course The optional language course will take place in the British Council certified language school WE-Bridge International in Cardiff. • Duration: 9am – 3pm (subject to change) • You will be assigned to a class depending on the level of English • • One cultural visit per week e.g. Open Air Museum, City Centre etc.

  7. Interview in preparation for the Work Placement • ETS will arrange your work placement • 3 placement options / sectors (1 st / 2 nd / 3 rd choice) we don’t know what’s possible until we present your CV • • Placements will depend on • Your qualification and / or experience (some sectors require more than others) • Language skills • Availability • Sometimes season • You need to be realistic (your skills / level of English) • • impossible sectors: airports, banks, fashion design, • Some sectors are very difficult: reception work, legal placements • This is a work placement NOT a Professional Training programme • You will be able to assist your colleagues with tasks • You will not be able to work as manager / manage important project • Placement Information • one-to-on meetings during first week of language course • Supervisor details / company details, / tasks

Work Placements • Placement locations usually in South Wales or • • The Midlands • West Country. • Usually not in London (only rare exceptions) • full time = 5 days out of 7 = 37.5 hours some sectors may require weekend / evening work • • No holidays other than official Bank Holidays • Most companies are small to medium sized businesses (SMEs) • Great opportunity to get to know how businesses work in the UK • More variety in tasks More personal atmosphere • • British Economy • In recession • Companies receive placement requests from all over the world! • Competition with British graduates

  9. • Trainee in the UK 1-2 weeks – getting used to the company, • • Colleagues getting to know you / your skills • Learn about the company • You need to prove yourself! Be mature and professional, Show initiative • • Expect to be treated like any other employee of the company Be respectful – UK is very multi cultural – you are expected to respect everyone • regardless of their race, religion, sexuality etc. British People are extremely polite (different to France / Germany etc.) • • Accept differences in culture and approaches to work Travel • • Commuting up to 1 hour is normal in the UK

Monitoring • Follow Up Phone Calls • student welfare officer • 2 telephone follow up calls at work placement • Questions about your work placement and accommodation • Discuss any concerns • In case of a problem 1. Speak to Supervisor / Host Family 2. Speak to Nicolò at ETS for advice Meeting at work / home  you, ETS, family / supervisor 3.  DO NOT TAKE PICTURES of your accommodation (=offence) • • Emergency number for out of office hours • As last resort ETS will change your placement / Family •  only if there is a valid reason + consent from Sending • organisation
