INNOV8 PRESENTATION TYPES

30 Minute Sessions Lifesaver

Lifesaver sessions are designed to share a particular idea or strategy that changed the way you teach. What transformational idea has changed the way you teach for the better? How has this idea helped support students who struggle?

Intervention Convention

These sessions highlight an intervention that worked with students who

  • struggle. Include details that would support teams in designing and

implementing their own intervention. Details might include timelines, content, and curriculum strategies, data collection, and assessment. What strategies or protocols are most effective for an intervention? How can we evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention?

Video Interactive

Video of Classrooms – This session highlights video of active classrooms including students who struggle and/or teachers discussing mathematics, solving problems, and sharing strategies. Using Video in the Classroom – This session demonstrates how to use video to engage students who struggle. Examples might include using video to ignite engaging tasks, showcase student solutions, and engage students in mathematical discourse. How can video enhance my instruction? How can video help my team change our teaching practice?

Student Stakeholder

Elementary/MS – During this session, a panel of elementary and middle grades students will share their stories of struggle in mathematics and their perspectives on how students can and should be supported. Learn how the teachers of these students helped them find success in mathematics. High School – During this session, a panel of high school students will share their stories of struggle in mathematics and their perspectives on how students can and should be supported. Learn how the teachers of these students helped them find success in mathematics.

60 Minute Sessions Content Session

This interactive session focuses on how content knowledge connects to classroom instructional practices for students who struggle. All sessions must include a grade band and a specific content related focus. How can we facilitate a deeper understanding of relevant mathematics content?

75 Minute Sessions Topical Session

(60 minute presentation + 15 minute facilitated discussion) This interactive session focuses on a particular topic that connects to classroom instructional practices for students who struggle. All sessions must include a specific topic appropriate for the grade level. How can (your instructional idea) support and enhance quality mathematics instruction? How can we reach all learners when we incorporate your instructional idea?

Facilitated Task Talk

(60 minute presentation + 15 minute facilitated discussion) This motivating session engages participants in solving a rich task, anticipating student responses, and discussing task implementation. Facilitators might share student work samples, video, or other evidence of student learning. Facilitators might also share task design and implementation strategies and adapted versions of the same task for diverse learners.

Research & Practitioner’s Paired Session

(60 minute presentation + 15 minute facilitated discussion) This engaging session partners a research and a practitioner to share their journey of translating research into practice. Speakers share insights about findings from research projects, experiences, and innovations that changed classroom instructional practices. How does a practitioner create classroom

  • pportunities for incorporating your research idea? How does a practitioner

access and implement effective strategies related to research? How can practitioners utilize your research idea to improve teaching?

Master Class

Master Class presenters will focus on the Mathematics Teaching Practices described in NCTM’s Principles to Actions. The grade-band specific sessions will focus on how the teaching practices can be implemented in the classroom in a way that supports struggling students.

Wellness Presentations

These are sessions that focus on your personal well-being. As classroom teachers you have to constantly respond to change, manage a work/life balance, and stay grounded. These sessions will help you to manage life’s challenges as a classroom teacher.

Other Presentation Types Major Keynotes

Experts in the field will address crucial topics related to and supporting the conference theme as well as the three conference pathways: Building effective mulit-tiered systems of support (MTSS), supporting productive struggle, and motivating the struggling learner.

Team Time

Thursday Team Time – This session is designed to guide teams in defining and deepening their understanding of a challenge they face related to mathematics instruction and struggling learners. Facilitators will guide teams in creating an action plan for addressing this challenge and in selecting conference sessions that will be beneficial in refining the action plan. Friday Team Time - This session will provide the opportunity for teams to receive feedback on the action plans they’ve created and to finalize their action plans using the knowledge and strategies they’ve gained from conference sessions. Teams will leave with a plan for continued action toward addressing their challenge.

Exhibitor Workshops

Exhibitor Workshops offer exhibitors an opportunity to showcase their products and services away from the Exhibit Hall. If you are interested in purchasing an exhibitor workshop, please visit: http://www.nctm.org/Innov8exhibit/
