Honor your father and your mother so that you may have a long life in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

EPHESIANS 6:1-3

Children, obey your parents as you would the Lord, because this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land.

Preliminary thought regarding the last six commandments:

They are speaking to our horizontal relationships.

MARK 12:29-31

This is the most important, Jesus answered: Listen, Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is One. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other command greater than these.

1 JOHN 4:20-21

If anyone says, I love God, yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For the person who does not love his brother he has seen cannot love the God he has not seen. And we have this command from Him: The one who loves God must also love his brother.

THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT

family relationships.

and the value of the father and mother.

• 3. The duty of every child is to honor their father

and mother.

My son, keep your fathers command, and don’t reject your mothers teaching. Always bind them to your heart; tie them around your neck.

They will say to the elders of his city, This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he doesn’t obey us. He’s a glutton and a drunkard. Then all the men of his city will stone him to death. You must purge the evil from you, and all Israel will hear and be afraid.

KEY THOUGHT: Children will honor their parents when there is an expectation for honor, and they are trained to honor.

REASONS WHY CHILDREN SHOULD HONOR THEIR PARENTS

• 1. It benefits society
• 2. To learn to honor God as their ultimate

authority to whom they are accountable

• 3. To be protected from ruining their life

PROVERBS 6:20-23

My son, keep your fathers command, and don’t reject your mothers teaching. Always bind them to your heart; tie them around your neck. When you walk here and there, they will guide you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; when you wake up, they will talk to you. For a command is a lamp, teaching is a light, and corrective discipline is the way to life.
