  5. Response to Intelligence Model -Adapted from The New RtI Response to Intelligence by Penny Choice and Sally Walker Tier 1 Remediation/Intervention Challenge/Rigor Tier 2 Meeting the Tier 2 Remediation needs of Supplemental through students in the Tier 3 Tier 3 Intervention in general Individualized Individualized addition to or or  Pull-Out education Self-Contained Self-Contained Core  Small Group setting through GT-PreAP Instruction  Tutoring differentiation Courses PreAP/AP/ GT Pullout On level Opportunities courses

  6. What do we measure? • The Verbal section measures a child’s ability to remember and transform sequences of words, to understand them and to make inferences and judgments about them. The Verbal score qualifies a student for the GT Humanities course • The Non-Verbal/Reasoning section measures reasoning using pictures and geometric shapes. This section reduces the impact of language on the student’s score. The Non-Verbal score qualifies a student for GT Accelerated Science course(s) • The Quantitative section measures a child’s understanding of basic quantitative concepts and relationships. ALL STUDENTS are eligible for the PreAP Math course, regardless of the CogAT score.

  7. Areas of Focus Identification Testing - CogAT ✤ All 6th and 7th Graders ✤ Current REACH (GT) students ✤ Referral Process ✤ Placement Committees ✤ Appeal form ✤

  8. 2015-2016 GT and Acceleration Courses • GT Humanities (PreAP- English and Social Studies – Double blocked) Available in both 7th and 8 th grade GT Accelerated Science – (7 th /8 th grade PreAP Science, • double blocked, two class periods) 7 th grade only Accelerated Math – Preparing 7 th graders to take PreAP Alg • ebra 1 in 8 th grade • GT Investigations – Elective course much like REACH

  9. 2015-2016 Humanities • The Humanities course will be taught in two class periods • The course combines PreAP English with PreAP History • The course will make connections between history, art, music and literature • Students will experience frequent divergent instruction; extension of prior learning; advanced critical thinking skills; problem-solving; creative interpretation and expression; and self-directed study.

  10. 2015-2016 Accelerated Science • The Accelerated Science course will be taught in two class periods. The course is being offered for only 7 th grade • The course will cover both 7 th /8 th grade science during the course of the year and • during two class periods. • During these courses there will be more in-depth problem solving experiences, with the primary focal point in the study to include conducting field and laboratory investigations. • Students will improve their science skills through inquiry based investigations and experiences; and increase their understandings through integration of biology, geology, astronomy, chemistry, and physics.

  11. 2015-2016 Accelerated Mathematics ALL STUDENTS are eligible for the PreAP Math course, reg ardless of the CogAT score. The identification and score can help in measuring a student’s ability, but should n ot be used to exclude a student from taking an advanced math course.

  12. 2015-2016 GT Investigations and Pullout Opportunities • The focus of the elective will be to accommodate the special needs, abilities, and interests of the students through a continuation of elementary gifted services. • The curriculum will feature opportunities to make cross-curricular connections, heuristic cognitive experiences integrated with individual student strengths and interests, and creative problem solving all designed to develop a growth mindset and address the unique social-emotional needs of these students. • GT pullout opportunities will be experience based and occur throughout the school year for all students that qualify for any of the secondary services.
