Student Finance England

Funding to study the 5 year Medicine (Mb Chb) Programme

  • Years 1-4 eligible to apply to SFE, not eligible for SFE Tuition Fee Loan – liable to pay tuition

fees yourself in years 1-4

  • Amount of SFE Maintenance Loan depends on household income (HHI)
  • SFE will assess on parents HHI if aged under 25
  • SFE will assess as independent if aged over 25 on 1st September
  • Maximum SFE Maintenance Loan in 19/20 = £8994 (if HHI under £25,000)

NHS Grants Unit

Funding to study the 5 year Medicine (Mb Chb) Programme

  • NHS will pay full Tuition Fee Grant
  • NHS Bursary for living costs does not need to be repaid
  • NHS will assess on parents HHI regardless of student age
  • Maximum NHS Bursary in 19/20 = £2643 + possible Extra Weeks’ Loan (£84pw)
  • All students are eligible for £1000 non means-tested Grant

Financial Assistance Fund (FAF)

  • Student Funding Office administers FAF
  • FAF is to help students in financial difficulty –

can only assess for living costs help NOT tuition fees

  • FAF looks at student income and expenditure,

not the parents’

  • Any awards made are in the form of a non

repayable grant
