Project Objective

  • 1. Replace the Biotower Rotating Mechanism
  • 2. Replace the Biofilter Mechanism
  • 3. Install a rotational speed controller on the

Biotower, and have the speed control option for the Biofilter in the future

  • 4. Replace the Corroded and Out-of-Code MCC
  • 5. Replace Biotower Pump Valves and related

parts.

Project Benefits

Replacing the Biotower and Biofilter rotary distributor mechanisms will offer:

– Repair aging equipment, failing bearings, corrosion – Improve nutrient removal – Improve flushing of biomass – Reduce system clogging snails – Reduce bio-weight on filter media, extending life – Reduce electrical energy use of Biotower – Reduce maintenance, – Reduce MCC overheating

Existing Equipment To Be Replaced

Biotower Mechanism The Biotower was constructed completed in 1988 and is now almost 30 years old: i. Eimco Impulse Drive Rotary Distributor Mechanism, painted carbon steel, bottom bearing leaking ~1/4 recirculation water ii. Recirculation Pump Motor Control Center, rusted,

  • perational heating and Code issues
  • iii. Pump isolation and check valves, leaking and warn

Existing Equipment To Be Replaced (continued)

Biofilter Mechanism The Biofilter rotating distribution mechanism was first installed in 1968. i. Existing Dual Feed Eimco rotating distributor center well with custom Dorr Oliver style truss arms, made from painted carbon steel

  • ii. Rehabilitated in the early 1990’s, now is over 25

years old: bearing and seals are aging, arms are rusty

Water Application Differences

Dosing Rate Increase:

  • Typical passive system: 0.25 to 1 gal/ft/pass
  • Motor/Speed Controlled: 2.5-5 gal/ft/pass
  • Flushing Rate: 7.5-25 gal/ft/pass

Rotation Speed from 1 min per revolution ( 1 RPM) Adjustable from 2 min to 45 min per RPM, Up to 2 hours per rev for flushing.

slide-24
SLIDE 24

Reduced Recirculation Possible

a) Current Recirculation Rate = 9 – 11 times in dry weather. b) Using 95 - 105 HP with 3 pumps. c) Possible reduced recirculation= 3 - 5 times. d) Proposed 25 to 45 HP with 1 or 2 pumps. e) Save 50-60 HP or 325,000 KW per year. f) At 15 cents/KW-hr, Save $49,000- $59,000 per year, est.

Resulting Improvements

i. Stainless steel

  • ii. Increased control of the rotational speed,
  • iii. Longer bearing life
  • iv. Covered MCC relocated away from the Biotower

tank walls, Shaded, AC for hot days

  • v. Space in the MCC for future installation of

controls for a blower or other process

  • vi. Provisions in the MCC for connection to SCADA.
