Cataract surgery in the Baltic Countries V. Jašinskas National Center of Ophthalmology , Lithuania 22nd Congress of the DGII in Heidelberg, 2008 Purpose. To analyze development of cataract surgery in the Baltic Countries (with emphasises on Lithuania).

Population ESTONIA 1,4 mln. LATVIA 2,3 mln. LITHUANIA 3,5 mln.

Methods. Retrospective analyses of cataract surgery evolution for Estonia, Latvia and prostective for Lithuania was performed. First study on Eye health care services in eastern Europe was performed 1998, second – 2003 year. Results. The cataract surgery rate in 1998 , 2003, and 2006 was: • Estonia 2530, 6123 and 7700 (personal communication with dr. A. Klett) • Latvia 1860, 2921 and 5000 (personal communication with prof. G. Laganovska) • Lithuania 1550, 2502 and 3800

Conclusion - observed progress in cataract surgery (qualitative and quantitative) - transition from ECCE to phacoemulsification is almost completed - IOL are used in all cases with obvious tendency toward foldable IOL - private practice (surgery) march it’s first steps
