The National Picture • New National Curriculum for Years 1, 3, 4 and 5 introduced in September 2014. • New National Curriculum extended to include Years 2 and 6 from September 2015. • New National Curriculum expectations more challenging and more prescriptive. • Removal of National Curriculum Levels from September 2015.

The National Picture • “By removing levels we will allow teachers greater flexibility in the way that they plan and assess pupils’ learning.” DfE • Expected standard by end of Year 6 has been raised. In 2014-2015 it was 65% of children achieving Level 4 or above in reading, writing and maths. New expected standard from this year is equivalent to old Level 4b or above.

  5. The National Picture • Performance Descriptors issued as draft and then withdrawn. Interim assessment framework for end of KS2 in reading, writing, maths and science issued mid-September 2015 for one year only. • New language – working towards the expected standard. – working at the expected standard. – working at greater depth within the expected standard.

  6. The National Picture • Schools expected to devise own assessment systems to meet their particular needs. • No national assessment guidelines.

  7. Next Steps for Schools Schools must devise own assessment system that meets the needs of: • Teachers. • Pupils. • Parents. • School leaders. • Government. • Ofsted.
