  1. ADDRESSING TOLERANCE THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL COUNSELING AND GUIDANCE PLAN BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING JULY 25, 2017

  2. TK-12 INITIATIVE

  3. ADDRESSING COLLEGE, ACADEMIC AND LIFE READINESS

  4. LIFE READY

  5. ANTI-DEFAMATION LEAGUE PARTNERSHIP • ”We believe our children have the right to live and learn in safe, respectful and inclusive communities and schools and that no child should experience discrimination/harassment based on an immutable characteristic”---Anti Defamation League • It is our intention to expand our strong 10-year partnership with the ADL across our 16 TK-12 clusters over the next seven years.

  6. ANTI-DEFAMATION LEAGUE: NO PLACE FOR HATE Goals : • To create a respectful, inclusive and safe learning environment and community • To build understanding of the value and benefits of diversity • To improve intergroup relations • To eradicate racism and all forms of bigotry • To encourage personal responsibility in the promotion of justice and equity

  7. LEARNING OUTCOMES: NO PLACE FOR HATE Develop the skills and motivation to become catalysts for positive change of school culture • Develop an understanding of basic terms and concepts relating to prejudice and discrimination • Develop a common vocabulary for discussing issues of bullying, diversity, and bigotry • Develop effective communication skills and apply these to their interactions with others • Increase their capacity to recognize and acknowledge prejudice in themselves and others • Develop skills to confront bias and discriminatory behaviors in themselves and others • Increase young people’s empathy, self-esteem, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities • Provide a forum where young people feel safe to define and speak out on important issues •

  8. NO PLACE FOR HATE • Four year roll out plan • Year One: Hoover, Crawford, Clairemont, Morse and Serra Clusters • 30 students at each elementary, middle and high school become peer leaders and part of the No Place for Hate Committee • Collaborate with Student Equity Ambassadors

  9. RECOMMENDATIONS TO SUPPORT OUR TK-12 PLANS • Address bullying consistently and fairly for all students regardless of race or religion. • Ensure that all religious holidays placed on our calendar • Ensure that all of our district efforts pay attention to the lens of race and culture though our work with National Equity Project rather than assign staff to work with specific religious groups. • Ensure that instructional materials follow state standards which requires discussion of the broader context of world religions--and these materials should be the only tools staff are provided in regards to world cultures. • Advocate for all youth we serve but not in the context of culture or religion. • Support staff in the development of school clubs outside of culture or religion.

  10. DIVERSITY ROUNDTABLE MEETING • The FACE Department Establishes, Convenes and Facilitates a Diversity Roundtable Meeting • No formal partnerships are established but diverse perspectives and concerns regarding anti-bias and anti-discrimination are discussed and next steps are suggested
