EVERY CHILD Finally catching up with the boy, MATTERS he asked why he was doing this. The answer was that the stranded starfish would die if left until the morning sun. “But the beach goes on for miles and there are millions of starfish,” said the old man. “How can your effort make any difference?” The boy looked at the starfish in his hand and then threw it safely in the waves. EVERY STAFF “It makes a difference to this one,” he said. MATTERS

SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICE (SHS) Main Objectives • Detect common health conditions among the school- going population through health screening. • Reduce illness from communicable diseases among the school-going population through immunization. • Target Population : ~ 500,000 students • ~ 300,000 students in ~ 200 Primary schools • ~ 200,000 students in ~ 170 Secondary schools

  29. PREPARATION FOR SCHOOL VISIT  Four weeks before the SHS health team visits the school, letters and information booklets about school-based health screening and immunization programme are given to the school for distribution to parents.

  30. MEDICAL SCREENING • The doctor will do a body check up. • Sometimes medical conditions in the student may not have symptoms. • Problems such as mild heart defects, slow growth rates, and other developmental problems may have no symptoms and so they may not be noticed. It is important that these problems are detected and treated early. • For the Primary 1 boys, testicles which can be abnormally positioned are checked by doctors. • For the Primary 5 children, pubertal assessment is done by doctors.

  31. HEIGHT AND WEIGHT • Height and Weight of the students are measured. • Through this, we can monitor the physical growth and normal development of students.

  32. VISION SCREENING • Eye test are done to check for common eye conditions like short- sightedness (myopia). • Good vision is very important for a child who is learning and growing. • Visual problems should therefore be corrected early.

  33. AUDIOMETRY SCREENING • School Health Team performs hearing test for primary 1 students and students new to MOE school system. • Our teams make use of a portable equipment to test if a child can hear sounds within a normal range of hearing. • Some children who have difficulties with schoolwork may actually have hearing problems that affect their studies. • If these hearing problems are detected and treated early, their learning abilities will improve.

  34. SCOLIOSIS SCREENING Scoliosis check: • The student will need to remove the outer garment and bend forward as in the picture. • Scoliosis is more common in girls than boys. • For girls, the check starts in P5. • For boys, the check starts in Sec 2.

  35. IMMUNISATION • All children in Singapore should be protected from certain infectious diseases through immunisation. • Immunisation is the safest and most effective way of protecting a child against certain infectious diseases. • Immunisation against Diphtheria and Measles are compulsory by law. • Primary 1 child will receive MMR booster 1(against measles, mumps and rubella) if they have not. • Primary 1 students will also receive booster immunisation against polio (until year 2019). Children born after 1 March 2013 will follow the new schedule. • Primary 5 child will receive booster immunisation against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and poliomyelitis.
