23

The groups worked hard to create a session which will identify young people’s health priorities

slide-24
SLIDE 24

(To be adapted for differing groups.) Introductions – who we are and why are we here

24

The session:

slide-25
SLIDE 25

List all the emotional issues a young person may have to face

(List a few examples to start … exams, sexuality, money, body image, … do in small groups/on flipchart for larger groups?

25

slide-26
SLIDE 26

It’s Time to Prioritise!

26

Ask the group to show which they think are the top issues. Be vague – offer them the opportunity to prioritise the top one, three, five or as many as they like. Our group identified they were ALL as significant as each other and ALL priorities!

SLIDE 27

The Health and Wellbeing Strategy vision

27

Everyone living in Shropshire is able to flourish by leading healthy lives, reaching their full potential and making a positive contribution to their communities

slide-28
SLIDE 28

28

This means …..

slide-29
SLIDE 29

You won’t be like this…..

29

slide-30
SLIDE 30

We want you to be ….

30

flourishing

slide-31
SLIDE 31

Draw a tree

31

slide-32
SLIDE 32

Now add some roots like these:

32

slide-33
SLIDE 33

Add all of your main issues next to the roots

33

slide-34
SLIDE 34

Flourish your tree!

34

Draw or stick onto your tree an image to help it look flourishing. For each decoration, write on what would help your tree to flourish. Use your roots to inspire you. ‘Bullying’ is on the root – draw a leaf and write any ideas e.g. ‘schools could involve students in creating ideas to combat bullying’ ‘I don’t know where to get help’ is at the root - draw an owl and write ideas e.g. ‘schools could advertise counselling services more’

slide-35
SLIDE 35

Our tree was very flourishing with lots of ideas!

The results of our group:

Our main Health issue is:

Stress

slide-37
SLIDE 37

Fortunately, we were able to take part in some fun and de-stressing activities!

37

slide-38
SLIDE 38

38

slide-39

The groups will now go out to their communities – schools, colleges and youth groups to deliver the session plan

Further Work

40

MYPs and the Health group of young people are supporting World Health Day which this year has high blood pressure as its focus. Stress can contribute to high blood pressure.

slide-41
SLIDE 41

EXERCISE!

41

Brogann Griffiths, MYP is piloting some ‘Walk to Health’ sessions in her school, William Brookes which will involve staff and students.

slide-42
SLIDE 42

De-Stress Activities

42

MYPs are hoping to run some de-stress sessions for staff and students. This will include 15 minute activities which schools and colleges could easily and cheaply run to help students to de-stress. This could supplement the excellent work already being done in schools on stress at exam times.

slide-43
SLIDE 43

This would include:

Laughter therapy Yoga Breathing exercises Lying down with relaxing music Air guitaring to loud music

43

slide-44
SLIDE 44

Film!

44

They are looking for funding to make a film singing about the many stresses young people may face and to highlight all the things young people can do to help themselves – showcasing in particular things which are available in Shropshire

slide-45
SLIDE 45

We are hoping Laura will put her song-writing talents into good use!

45

slide-46
SLIDE 46

Celebrities!

46

MYPs also want to write to celebrities and other people to ask them ways in which they ‘de-stress.’ Alison Williamson, Olympic archer, met the MYPs and said that archery was a great way to relax!
